It's official - he's speaking

Yesterday the little boy and I were sitting on my bed practicing the alphabet. He had to ask for a letter which I then gave to him and he would add it to his own line of letters. Without prompting, those big brown eyes looked at me, his brow furrowed, his hand ready to sign, he said:

Tea Cher Jo, I want K.

One small line, one huge leap for him, one happy heart for me.

Then running down the hall later, he pronounced:

Tea Cher Jo, mum my here.

And he was right. His mummy had pulled into the drive. 5 minutes later, she drove off with a happy smile and wet eyes.

I love my job.

What were the words that he said to his mother when she arrived?

Were these the first words he has spoken or is he / was he just very reticent to speak?

The way you describe this event it must have been just so rewarding....well done.

Life can be so good sometimes.

Actually, to her he just sort of grunted. :) He's still learning 'hell-o mama". But I relayed what had taken place and she was very happy.

His speaking problems stem from a delayed ability to physically form the words with his mouth - like a co-ordination problem. He was making 'baby babble' sounds when I met him, but no words. Now he rote-counts clearly, says the abc and is learning short phrases and words. But he can only say those things we've specifically taught him - he can't make up his own sentences yet because his speaking vocab is still limited. However, it's only a matter of time.

It's so good to work with someone who makes such good progress in such a short amount of time. Most kids I work with take a year or more to show some sort of progress. He's been my best student yet.
