It makes me so glad I can make a difference. For people with Asperger's syndrome or autism, making jokes is often an elusive skill. It often requires thinking on a non-literal, abstract level that they find hard to do, which is why you should try not to use idioms when talking to them eg, you drive me nuts or go break a leg. They will often take you literally and idioms never make sense that way.
Anyway, I've noticed this year that Zhi Lin has started to understand the silly jokes we make and has, indeed, started to make them herself. This is tremendous progress in terms of her somewhat limited social skills and I'm so proud of her. She works hard, she follows the rules and now she can crack jokes! I think she will be OK. She has a full life ahead of her and I feel so happy to have been a part of her successful transition into the regular world.
I love my job.

How old is Zhi Lin?
Yes I do understand that age when it comes to some disabilities is not necessarily relevent BUT ....how old?

Thanks guys (blush), Mr S., she is 8 going on 9, in Grade 3. This is our fourth year together. It's been great. I adore her.
